ORBIT BENEFITS CASE STUDY
BEA Systems plugs in to the power of Orbit
With three employee pension schemes and two executive plans, the UK division of BEA Systems Inc., the world's leading application infrastructure company, wanted to improve the way that it met employee demand for information about benefits.
It decided to rationalise different streams of data and information into a single location and chose to implement the online transactional benefits system from Orbit Benefits, incorporating the TIMA interactive pension calculator. This gives employees access to information about every part of the employee benefits package, including pension information and values, whenever they wish.
Zoe Spicer, UK HR Manager at BEA Systems, says the main benefit of the service is the way it empowers staff.
“They can access their information in realtime and reach decisions from the comfort of their workstations.”
“At BEA Systems we operate employee and manager self-service HR administration through PeopleSoft. Therefore, using the Orbit applications aligns strategically with the way we run our HR systems. Trusting employees to be their own agent is core to the Orbit offering and this is something that gels with our philosophy.”

Implementation of the Orbit system has been the first step towards the launch of flexible benefits at BEA Systems, to further encourage employees to make the most of their benefits package.
Employees now have daily fund values and performance statistics for their pension fund at their fingertips. With the TIMA pension calculator already holding their personal data, employees can effortlessly and instantly work out how much they need to invest to meet their expectations in retirement. The ability to manipulate data to find the optimum contribution level and the suitable pension fund for each individual gives unsurpassed levels of financial control. The popularity of the service is clear from the fact that the majority of UK personnel have logged- on to the service and conducted online calculations.
For the company itself, the Orbit self-service approach minimises the administrative involvement. In the past, the HR co-ordinator was the employees' main point of contact for all benefits. With multiple pension schemes and employee benefits, this could be a time- consuming role. Now, the time previously spent processing enquiries and changes can be better applied to enhancing core HR services.
BEA Systems was attracted to Orbit by its extensive experience with the IT sector, but Zoe Spicer says that it was not just the impressive high-tech approach that appealed.
“The experience that Orbit's specialist consultants can offer means there is always the choice of face-to face consultation. The centralising of information is unique to the Orbit approach, with online functionality fully supported by in-depth industry knowledge.”
“Orbit is not just another technology provider with a good idea — it really knows its business”.
